Week 8 - Love is all you need.
The Music of What Happens, by Bill Konigsberg
Max has an opportunity to work on his classmates, Jordan, family food truck for the summer. The 2 are polar opposites but both are dealing with heavy issues. Can they lean on each other and find common ground?
I found this book on the Barnes and Noble website:
This looks like a fun summer read. While there are deep topics such as sexual assault and family sickness/death I like a story of an unlikely friendship.
When Katie Met Cassidy by Camille Perri

Katie, a 28-year-old lawyer in NY is dumped by her male fiance and in her misery befriends co-worker Cassidy. Katie's idea of love is turned inside out when she begins to develop a relationship and feelings for sexually promiscuous Cassidy.
This book was recommended to me by the bookseller at Silver Unicorn Bookstore
This author visited the Silver Unicorn and her book sold out immediately. I think a sell out book is worth a try. The first random page I read in the book described a romantic almost sexual scene. It might be even too much for high school.
Hearts Unbroken by Cynthia Leitich Smith

Louise breaks up with her first real boyfriend over inappropriate comments about her Native heritage. While she chooses to use her Sr year in high school to focus on the school paper she is paired with Joey, the school newspaper photographer to cover the huge controversy breaks out at school in this predominately white suburb. The school theater teacher is attempting and all inclusive performance of Wizard of Oz and families are up in arms about it.
I was drawn to this cover because it clearly is about a romance. It was on display at Silver Unicorn Book Store.
I think the premise of this book is so relevant today. The inclusive version of the Wizard of Oz reminded me about the uproar surrounding the live-action little mermaid actress announcement.
If You Could Be Mine by Sara Farizan

This story takes place in modern day Iran where homosexuality is illegal but gender reassignment is not. Sahar has been in love with her best friend Nasrin since they were six. But now Nasrin parents are arranging for her to marry. Sahar considers sex change as a way to be with her. How far will she go for love?
I also found this at Silver Unicorn and chose it because it had a positive review from one bookseller.
I am intrigued by the middle east, their culture, the wars, and their way of life. The setting is what drew me to this story. Gender reassignment seems like quite a drastic choice to make when you are seventeen and not really doing it because you feel like a man trapped in a woman's body. Love makes us do crazy things, I guess.
Technically You Started It by Lana Wood Johnson

Hailey texts with Martin though it isn't the Martin she thinks he is. Martin doesn't know that she has mistaken his identity and their relationship via text blossoms.
I briefly flipped through this book at the bookstore and liked that the format was mostly in text format. It looks like a quick but fun read.
